Mr. Owen W. Shepherd
1928-2009
Owen William Shepherd … 80, of Aylesford, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at home. Born in Garland, he was a son of the late William and Elsie (Hilling) Shepherd. He was a welder by trade and worked throughout Nova Scotia, in particular the Annapolis Valley and retired in Aylesford. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, buying and selling and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, the former Jean Rockwell; four children, William, Donnellans Brook; Elaine (Michael) Lewis, Aylesford; Brian (Pam), Morden; Marilyn (Darrell) Foster, Aylesford; two sisters, Margaret (the late Murray) Leopold, Tillsonburg, Ontario; Ruth (Harold) Sheils, Belleville, Ontario; a sister-in-law, Eileen Shepherd, Black Rock; 11 grandchildren, Matthew, Allen, Tammie, Kyle, Jeremy, Keegan, Elizabeth, Michelle, Amy, Sarah and Susan; seven great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Allan. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2009, Reverend Leon Langille officiating. Burial will take place in the Berwick Cemetery. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to The Lung Association. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.

Mr. Shirley "Buck" Vaughan
1948-2009
Shirley Lester “Buck” Vaughan … 60, of Forsythe Road South, Wolfville, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Wolfville, he was a son of the late Vernon and Jennie (Parsons) Vaughan. He had been employed as a driver with Farmer’s Dairy for 13 years and most recently drove with Kings Transit for 24 years. He was a general handyman who could fix almost anything. He enjoyed working on various machines and vehicles and was an avid sports fan, especially hockey. He was a people person and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and his dog, Jake. He is survived by his wife, the former Marion Spencer; a daughter, Tammy (William) Morgan, New Minas; a son, Mark Vaughan (Sue Morse), Coldbrook; three sisters, Bev (Errol) Zwicker, Lockhartville; Marilyn (Kenny) Coleman, New Minas; Sharon Thorpe (Garth Croft), New Minas; eight brothers, Avery (Margaret) and Larry (Joanne), both of Greenwich; Bob (Grace), Halls Harbour; Wayne (Suzanne), New Minas; Randy (Deborah), Ontario; Terry (Pat), Centreville; Ricky (Tina), New Minas and Bruce (Kerri), Kentville; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Vaughan, Greenwich; a brother-in-law, Burton (Stella) Spencer, Baxter’s Harbour; four grandchildren, Brittany, Shae-Lynn, Kayleigh and Riley; 31 nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Vivian (and her husband, Raymond) Morin; a brother, Cyril and a niece. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 9, 2009, Reverend Thelma McLeod officiating. A private family burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.

Mr. Willis Porter
1945-2009
Willis Colin Porter … 63, of Grafton, Kings County passed away suddenly, Friday, February 6, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, Kings County, he was the son of Florence (Illsley) Porter, Grafton and the late Lawrence Porter. He attended Central Kings Rural High School and at the conclusion of grade 10 enrolled in the Wolfville school and later Acadia University, Wolfville. He was a sporting enthusiast with an active interest in basketball and had been inducted in the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially visiting his uncle, Eugene and cousin, Gail for their Monday night card games. He was co-owner of P. W. Sales in Coldbrook and was a regular 6:00 a.m. visitor of Tim Horton’s in Coldbrook. In addition to his mother, he is survived by brothers, Gerald (LaVerne), Lakeville, Kings County and Dale, Grafton; sister, Connie (Irving) Fredericks, Black Rock; three nieces, Pam (Douglas) Spidle, Karen (Wayne) Comeau, Kelly (Kenny) Mansfield, all of Black Rock; great nieces and nephews, Wayne (Rebecca) and Nicole Spidle, Michael, Colin and Ethan Comeau, Korey and Kendra Mansfield; a great great nephew, Jake. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a nephew, Mark Porter. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation, by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A private family burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.

Mrs. Marilyn D. Davidson
1949-2009
Marilyn Deborah Davidson … 59, of Kentville, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Wolfville, she was a daughter of the late William and Florence (O’Brien) Hake. In her younger years she was employed with Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville and most recently had been seasonally employed with Blueberry Acres, Hillaton, Kings County. She enjoyed spending time with her family and loved her grandchildren. She is survived by two daughters, Cindy (Don) Parr, Avonport; Karla (Paul) MacIntyre, Calgary; a son, Everett Oickle Jr., Gatineau, Quebec; a special friend, Robert Spencer, Kentville; four sisters, Dorine (Douglas) Grey, Bath, Ontario; Donna Davidson, Kentville; Linda (Clifford) Bowen, Brantford, Ontario; Virginia (Willie) Weatherbee, New Minas; seven brothers, Charles (Maria), Brantford, Ontario; Arnold, Gary (Valerie), David (Brenda), Larry, Carl (Karen) and Darrell (Donna), all of Kentville; six grandchildren, Wesley, Samantha, Jacob, Nathan, Katelyn and Donovan; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Everett Oickle Sr.; her second husband, Ralph Davidson and a sister, Sharon Oickle. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 15, 2009, Reverend Thelma McLeod officiating. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.

Mrs. Theresa M. Southern
1936-2009
Theresa Marie Southern - 73, of Cambridge, Kings County, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Oswald and Henrietta (Morley) Phalen. She is survived by three sons, Terry (Cheryl), Comox, BC; William (Rose) and Robert (Sonia), Powell River, BC; a daughter, Wanda (Gordon) Chase, North Alton; two brothers, Donald, Wolfville and Lloyd (Bessie), New Minas; a sister, Doreen Corkum, New Minas; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Thornton; a brother, Wilfred; a sister, Shirley Bain. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and by Theresa’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.

Mr. George A.F. Ashby
1917-2009
George Albert Frederick Ashby - 93, of Kentville, passed away Friday, February 13, 2009 at home. Born on March 27, 1915 in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, he was a son of the late Frederick and Eliza (Brown) Ashby. He lived his whole life in the Annapolis Valley and retired from Cornwallis Motors. He was an active bowler and participated in many tournaments over the years. He was a charter member of the Kentville Lions Club and in 2001 received the Volunteer of the Year Award for the town of Kentville. He also enjoyed his poker group and was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. He is survived by two daughters, Muriel (David) Johnston, Bedford; Linda Robinson, Calgary; two sons, Michael (Diane), Kentville; Terry (Lana), Newtonville, Kings County; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mildred MacInnis; a sister, Elsie; three brothers, Clarence, William and Harry. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation, by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 16, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Family flowers only by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Kentville Lions Club. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
