MURPHY (MacKay), Margaret Joan
Passed away on January 9, 2009, in Lansing Retirement Home in Toronto, Ont. at the age of 88 years. Beloved wife of the late William (Bill) Murphy. Loving mother to Margaret Fearon (Blair) and dear grandmother to Kyle and Andrew, all of Toronto. Also she is survived by her brother, Donald MacKay (Helen) of Ottawa. The family will receive friends at Humphrey Funeral Home-A.W. Miles Chapel, Toronto (1-800-616-3311), from 6 p.m. until the time of the service in the chapel at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13. A memorial service will also be held in Sydney, Nova Scotia at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, 2300 Yonge Street, Suite 1300, Toronto, ON M4P 1E4 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 20 Holly Street, Suite #101, Toronto, ON M4S 3B1.

GODFREY, A. Brenton
83, High Street, Pictou, died December 20, 2008, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Pictou, he was a son of the late Arthur and Elizabeth Godfrey. Brenton was predeceased by his wife, Moira, and brother, Hollie. He is survived by son, Andrew (Heather), Lower Sackville; daughter, Beth Williams, North Kingston; grandchildren, Christa, Holly, Liam and Robin; great- grandchildren, Bandy, Kaila and Casey; brother, David, Halifax; sister, Betty Matheson, Riverview, N.B.; several nieces and nephews. Breton was a long-time Captain of the Pictou Fire Department and actively involved with Pictou Youth through the First Pictou Boy Scout Troup and Pictou Firemen's Youth Band. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Arrangements are under the direction of McLaren Funeral Service, Pictou.

HUTCHINS, Elizabeth D.
With sadness, we acknowledge the sudden passing of Elizabeth (Bette) Hutchins (Kerr, LeDrew) on January 8, 2009 in her 88th year. Beloved wife of Bill of Halifax. Loving mother of Grant and Janice (Orville); stepmother to Bob (Marlene) and Sharlene. Precious Nana to Kimberlea (Stephane), James (Susie) and Peter, she is survived by sister Anne, California and Donald, Sydney Mines. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, January 13 at 2 p.m. in Rockingham United Church, 12 Flamingo Drive (443-2947) followed by visiting and an informal reception in the Church Hall.

JONES, Cluny R.
70, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully in Dartmouth General Hospital on January 7, 2009. Cluny was born in Wesleyville, N.L. on June 23, 1938. He was the son of the late Sidney and Mary Ann Jones. Left to mourn are sons, Warren (Gisele), Edmonton, Alta.; Wilfred (Heather), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Brian, Derek, Alicia, MacKenzie, Nicholas; brothers, Jabez (Eva), Newfoundland; and George (Lillian), Ontario; sister, Louise Gowler, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Donna Sooley (Herbert), Dartmouth. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his companion, Vivian Hickey, Dartmouth; brother, John, Maine; and sisters, Priscilla Richardson, Newfoundland; Emeline Adamson, Nova Scotia; Pearl Jones, South Carolina. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Halifax Regional Crematorium. Burial to take place in Newfoundland at a later date. Donations can be made in Cluny's memory to Canadian National Institute for the Blind.

BISHOP (Reid), Jean Vallis
October 31, 1919-January 7, 2009. Our lovely wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully in Extendicare Cedars Villa in the presence of her husband, Art Bishop and daughters, Nancy Smith and Sally Haggis. Jean is also survived by her sons-in-law, Wayne Smith and Adrian Haggis, and her grandchildren, Conrad, Sterling, Reid, and Ella. Jean was born in St. John, N.B., to Harry and Helen Reid, however, the family moved to Windsor, where she grew up. Harry was a photographer and Jean became a favourite subject, dressing up in costumes for the camera. She loved to skate and dance as a girl and attended Windsor Academy, then later graduated from Acadia University in Wolfville, with a B.A. and a B.Ed. Following graduation she taught school in Carlton, Hantsport and Halifax. Jean married Arthur Bishop in 1948 and moved west in 1951 to Edmonton, eventually settling in Calgary. She continued teaching as a substitute teacher until Nancy and Sally were born. She was a conscientious and loving mother, keeping her daughters busy with activities and opportunities to try new things. Jean was active in and held executive positions with Riverview United Church Women, the Oil Wives Club of Calgary and later with the Women's Canadian Club. She enjoyed curling, bowling, fitness, bridge and traveling, especially to London, England. Jean and Art flew many trans-continental trips to the Caribbean in Art's light airplanes with Jean as co-pilot and navigator. She was a real lady with a love of fashion who always looked great whether in casual clothes or ready for a night out. Her sweet and gentle nature and kind thoughtfulness will be missed. Good-bye Grammie we love you. DeYOUNG, Michael Francis
74, Halifax, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2009, in the QEII. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late George and Mary Anna (Yeadon) DeYoung. Michael served his country in the Korean Conflict. He was a longtime resident of Kline Heights, and he was a long-time member of the Spryfield Legion. He is survived by daughters, Mary (DeYoung) (Darrell) Davidson, Waverley, and Joanne (DeYoung) (Robert) Ubdergrove, Ardoise; grandchildren, Melissa and Darrell Davidson, Jaimie Leigh DeYoung; great-grandchild Mia Grace; brother, Gordon and sister, Anne, both of Harrietsfield. He was predeceased by brothers, James and Donald; sisters, Kathleen, Margaret and Eileen in infancy; lifelong friend, Rubin Marriott. The family would like extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the QEII Health Sciences Center, floors 5, 6 and 8, for their excellent care and compassion. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Spryfield (477-5601). By request there will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at 2 p.m. in Emmanuel Anglican Church, Spryfield. Interment to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. A reception will be held in the Spryfield Legion. Donations in Michael's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.

LANGILL, Roderick Wayne
62, of Greenwood, passed away on Friday, January 9, 2009, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in New Westminster, B.C., but raised in Amherst, he was the son of the late Albert and Helene (MacDougall) Langill. He had retired after 32 years with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Warrant Officer, photo tech. Roderick loved his computer, music, summer barbeques and the Detroit Red Wings. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Alice (Green); daughters, Carrie Lynn (Glenn Johnson), Greenwood, and Deanna Marie (Brian Lacey), Trenton, Ont.; sisters, Maureen (Eldon) Deegan, Amherst; Dianne Langill, Port Coquitlam, B.C., and brother, Alan (Marian Nalley) Langill, Richmond Hill, Ont. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his younger sister, Gayla Johnson. Cremation has taken place, as per his wishes. A memorial service will be held at 1400 hours Tuesday, January 13, 2009, in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448 with a reception to follow. Padre Harold King will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

O'LANEY, Emma P.
78, East River Manor, New Glasgow, formerly of Laggan, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born in Wellington, P.E.I., she was a daughter of the late James Ralph and Agnes Laurenda (Landry) Gomm. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, picking wild berries, camping and the outdoors. Emma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who was happiest when surrounded by her family. Surviving are her daughters, Theresa (Carl) MacLeod, Avondale; Doris (George) Simms, Kenzieville; Eva (Bob) Dean, Broadway; Faith (Roger) Manuel; Tecumseh, Ont.; Kathy (Roy) Rogers, Hamilton, Ont.; Denise (Eddie) Freeman, Trenton; Darlene (Clynt MacDonald), Truro; sons, Dan (Sharon) Praught, Lower Sackville; Dougie (Freda), Kenzieville; Bill (Jenny), Lower Barney's River; David (Karen), Westville Road; Charlie (Patsy), MacLellan's Brook; sisters, Mary Reynolds, Gatineau, Que.; Margaret Praught, Halifax; 31 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Douglas Ray O'Laney; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; eight sisters; eight brothers. The family will receive visitors 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glagow, from where funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, in the chapel with Rev. Aidan Kingsbury officiating. Cremation to follow. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.

GIBSON, Barbara Jean
89, of Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown, formerly of Round Hill, passed away January 10, 2009, in the lodge. Born in Digby, she was a daughter of the late Hugh and Minerva (Patterson) Goldsmith. Barbara was a former member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Round Hill, and was a member of the choir and the Altar Guild. She was a real animal lover especially her cats. She danced with the Lorettes at the House of Roth and was an avid bridge player. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she is survived by three nieces and four nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, James; sisters, Audrey Reynolds and Gertrude Goldsmith. There will be no visiting by family request. Funeral service followed by a reception will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, in Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Bridgetown, with Rev. Liz Earley officiating. Interment will be in Round Hill Cemetery. Donations in Barbara's memory may be sent to Mountain Lea Lodge, Annapolis Community Health Centre or to a charity of one's choice.

MacDONALD, David Roy "Jack"
Born September 3, 1920, in New Waterford. Jack was the last surviving family member of the late Alan Hugh and Catherine (MacPhee) MacDonald. He died at home in Antigonish on January 9, 2009. He received his early education at Mt. Caramel School, and in 1941 enlisted in the air force serving with the RAF and later with Bomber Command Squadron 433 of the RCAF. In 1948 he married the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty) Sears, and soon after earned his B.A. degree from St. Francis Xavier University. Jack was a well-known businessman with Eastern Auto and was active in many community affairs. He served as campaign coordinator for both the "Building for Youth" and "Building for Health" projects which resulted in the construction of the Antigonish Arena and St. Martha's Hospital. As well, he was a town councillor for Antigonish and a past president of Royal Canadian Legion Arras Branch 59. Jack was a man of integrity, honesty and faith who maintained his positive sense of humor even in his final days. A renaissance man, he was a piper in the Antigonish Pipe Band, an avid reader, and one who savored a good political discussion. He was a lifelong participant in sports. Jack enjoyed the Boston Red Sox and golfing with friends and family at Antigonish Golf Club. The only thing he loved more than living in Antigonish was his family. He was always happiest when he had family members sitting around the dinner table. Jack is survived by his wife, Betty (Sears); and his legacy of five sons and three daughters, David (Emma), Allan (Susan), Colin (Barb), Paul (Ellen), Fergus (Lois), Jean (Greg Galbraith), Mairi (Danny Smith), and Jill (Roger Thomas). He had 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., Antigonish. Funeral Mass 11 a.m. Wednesday, in St. Ninian's Cathedral. Donations to the Antigonish Palliative Care Society or the Antigonish Chapter of VON.

FLYNN, John Weaver
81, Beaver Cove, passed away in Cape Breton Regional Hospital Friday, January 9, 2009, surrounded by his family. Born in Sydney, May 29, 1927, he was the son of the late John and Bernadine Flynn and is survived by son, Lorne; daughters, Leah, Lori; sisters, Helen Pickles, Judy Penny, Deanne Dennison; brother, Terrance; grandchildren, Sharon, Cheryl, Shauna, Lindsey, Michael, Peter and Kyle; three great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by wife, Geraldine; daughter, Linda; brother, Melvin. No visitation by request.

PERCY, Wayne Anthony
66, of Waverley, died peacefully at home on December 20, 2008, in the loving care of his wife of 40 years, Sharron (MacPhee) Percy. Born in Almonte, Ont., December 15, 1942, Wayne is survived by daughters, Barb Dodge, Donna and Leslie Percy, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three sisters, four brothers and many nieces and nephews, all of Carleton Place and Ontario area. Also survived by stepdaughter, Crystal (Ron) Williams and their son, Forest of Waverley; stepson, Mark (Kim) Welner of Fairview; and brothers-in-law, Milton MacPhee (Annick) of Bedford; Joe (Glenda) MacPhee, Neepawa Man., and mother-in-law, Ina MacPhee of Neepawa, Man. and Waverley. He was predeceased by parents, Ella and Tony Percy, brother, William (Bill) Percy and father-in-law, William (Ben) MacPhee. Wayne spent more than 30 years as an oilfield and heavy equipment welder in the Peace River country of Northern Alberta. He greatly enjoyed hunting, trapping and the long drives to visit family "back east". Wayne was a longtime Legion member having been in the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Militia Unit. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at the Dieppe No. 90 RC Legion Waverley on January 15, at 2 p.m., Rev. Valerie Kingsbury officiating. Interment at a later date in Carleton Place, Ontario. Special thanks to the VON, Palliative Care Team and Dr. Michael Fleming.
