BATEMAN, Mary S. - 98, Northside Guest Home, formerly 13 Regent St., North Sydney, died April 21, 1999, in the home. Born in Rose Blanche, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Harriet Hatcher. She was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are son, Melvin, North Sydney; daughter, Ruth Smith, Mississauga, Ont.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry C.; sons, Wilson, Sidney, Alexander. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today, funeral 2 p.m. Friday, both in W.J. Dooley Funeral Home and chapel, Rev. David Hann officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Donations to St. Matthew Wesley United Church or any charity.

HINES, Muriel
HINES, Muriel - 97, 320 Alexandra St., Sydney, died April 20, 1999, in the Cove Guest Home. Born in Indian Islands, Fogo, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Lorenzo and Lydia (Frampton) Collins. She was a member of Christ Anglican Parish. She operated a store on Victoria Road for 40 years, Hines Dairy retiring in 1970. Surviving are daughters, Florence; Rene Sives, with whom she resided prior to going to the home; Jean Coish, Lewisport, Nfld.; sons, Roy, Ontario; Aubrey, Florida; Donnie, Liverpool; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Harold Collins, St. John's Nfld.; step-sister, Meta Andrews, St. John's, Nfld.; step-brother, Kennie Frampton, Bedford. She was predeceased by her husband, Aubrey; son, Harold; brother, Albert Collins. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral 2 p.m. Friday in Christ Church, Rev. Glenn Kent officiating. Burial in Hardwood Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Christ Church memorial fund or any charity.

STEWART, Olive
STEWART, Olive - 87, Westside Villa and formerly of 3 Hayward Court, Truro, passed away April 20, 1999, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Lower Onslow, she was a daughter of the late Homer and Matilda (Dingle) Taylor. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She resided in Truro for the past several years. She is survived by daughters, Geraldine, Carolyn and Audrey, all of Ontario; sons, Beldon, Truro; Ralph, Charles and Harold, all of Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel; daughter, Phyllis; sons, William, Glen, Raymond and Cecil; sisters, Lillian MacLean and Muriel Mooring; brothers, Peter and William Taylor. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. today, with funeral service 3 p.m. Friday, both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, Rev. Janet Blois officiating. Burial will be in Blackmore Memorial Cemetery, Upper North River. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation, or to a charity of choice.

CHURCHILL, Olive Mae - 94, Villa St. Joseph du Lac, Dayton, Yarmouth Co., died February 8, 1999, in the villa. Born in Kemptville, Yarmouth Co., she was a daughter of the late Samuel A. and Blanche E. (Hamilton) Morton. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Surviving are her husband, Ormond; son, Donald Morton, Toronto; stepdaughters, Elise Hersey, Port Maitland; Virginia Patten, Yarmouth; Carol Churchill, Sandford, Yarmouth Co. She was predeceased by sisters, Evelyn Killam, Irene MacRae; stepson, Russell. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth.

BURKE, Marjorie Marie - 74, Dartmouth, passed away February 16, 1999, at home. Born in East Boston, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Peter and Ann Rose (Porter) Surette. Marjorie and Nelson formerly resided in Stoneham, Mass. Marjorie worked as a secretary at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston for 20 years and was a member of St. John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, Cole Harbour. Surviving are her husband, Nelson W.; daughter, Ann Rose, Norwood, Mass.; son, Carl M., Hanson, Mass.; brothers, Richard Surette, Wakefield, Mass.; Edmund Surette, St. Anne du Ruisseau, Yarmouth Co.; loving grandmother of Megan. She was predeceased by her brothers, Ambrose and Edward. Visitation 7-9 p.m. today, February 17, in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, Dartmouth. The remains will be transferred for visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, February 18, to Huskilson's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Funeral service will be held 10: 30 a.m., Friday, February 19, in St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church, St. Anne du Ruisseau, Yarmouth Co., Rev. Emery Brien officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

McLORIE, Germaine A.
McLORIE, Germaine A. - Passed away suddenly and peacefully at Central Park Lodge, Toronto, on Saturday, February 13, 1999, at the age of 73. Beloved wife of the late David. Dear mother of Gordon, Toni and Mary Anne. Fondly remembered by her six grandchildren, sisters and brother. Visitation was held at Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles Chapel, Toronto, on February 15, from where service was held February 16 in the chapel. Private interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, 1920 Yonge Street, Toronto, ON M4S 3E2.

He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed bowling. Surviving are brothers, Timothy, Michael, Halifax; Lawrence, Burton, New Brunswick; Brian, Winnipeg. He was predeceased by brothers, Edward, Patrick, Joseph, Dennis, Terence, Sean, Peter. His remains have been donated to Dalhousie Medical School. Memorial mass Saturday, October 9, at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Russell Street, Halifax, Rev. Pottie officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Donations to Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, Bayer's Road, Halifax.

GRANT, D. Lewis "Louie"
GRANT, D. Lewis "Louie" - 75, MacLellan Street, Antigonish, died February 16, 1999, at home. Born in Brierly Brook, Antigonish Co., he was a son of the late Joseph M. and Rose (MacGillivray) Grant. He was a mechanic by trade, having worked for Eastern Automobile Co., Antigonish, for over 30 years. He was later a foreman for the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation where he worked until his retirement in 1989. He was an active member of Antigonish Volunteer Fire Department for 46 years and hospitality minister in St. Ninian's Parish. He was an avid sportsman and volunteer in both track and field, and minor hockey, and spearheaded the revival of the Antigonish Junior "B" Bulldogs Hockey Team. He was also instrumental in organizing the Seniors Skating Program. He was a member and active supporter of the Progressive Conservative Party. His strong community involvement was recognized by the province with the presentation of the 1998 Volunteer of the Year Award for the Town of Antigonish. He is survived by his wife, the former Anne MacDougall; daughters, Anne Marie (Joseph) Durant, Pomquet; Louise (Arnold) Van Heighten, Napanee, Ont.; Janet (Jerome) MacPherson, Antigonish; sons, Danny (Sharon), Yemen; Billy (Bernadette), Brierly Brook; Colin (Sylvia), Germany; John (Donna), Didsbury, Alta.; sisters, Margaret Reddy and Dorothea Purcell, Antigonish; Gertrude MacIntyre and Inez Grant, Halifax; brothers, Arthur, Brierly Brook; Leo, Thunder Bay, Ont.; 14 grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Joseph and Frank; sister, Marjorie. Visitation will be on Friday from 7-9 p.m. and on Saturday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish. Funeral will be on Sunday at 2 p.m. in St. Ninian's Cathedral, Rev. Bill Crispo officiating, assisted by Rev. Greg MacKinnon and Rev. P.J. Baccardax. Burial at a later date in St. Ninian's Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Antigonish Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society.
