William Arthur "Bill" Ryan

RYAN, William Arthur "Bill" - 94, Halifax, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2002, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII. Born in Halifax, in 1908, he was a son of the late Arthur and Ellen (Kearns) Ryan.

He served overseas during the Second World War, serving in England, France, Belgium and Holland. He retired from DVA after 27 years of service. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are his nephews, Joseph and Francis Hammond; niece, Marguerite Ryan. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Ruby Nicolle; sisters, Florence Hammond, Helen and Kay Ryan; brother, Gordon Ryan. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, November 28, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. Funeral service 9 a.m. Friday, November 29, in St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, North Street, Father Hans Feichtinger officiating. Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Family flowers only. Donations may be made in memory to Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII or a charity of choice.

Sydney Alexander Roper

ROPER, Sydney Alexander - 91, Halifax, passed away November 25, 2002, in Melville Lodge, Halifax. Born in Ingonish, he was a son of the late Howard and Elizabeth (Tucker) Roper.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Lena Umlah; sisters, Carrie and Margaret; brothers, John and Henry.

Visitation will take place 1-2 p.m. Thursday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, where funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Rev. Diane MacVicar officiating. Burial will take place in St. Johns Cemetery.

Family flowers only, donations may be made to a charity of donor's choice.

Dr. Nigel Merchant

MERCHANT, Dr. Nigel - Dartmouth, passed away November 25, 2002. He practiced Emergency Medicine at the former Victoria General Hospital (QEII) for 25 years.

For the past year, he was a Civilian Doctor with Stadacona Base, Halifax. His healing hands have touched many lives. His passion for medicine prompted him to give freely of his time and expertise to any who needed it. He will be sorely missed as a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, relative, friend, doctor and colleague. Born in Coventry, England, he was a son of Ronald Merchant, Trenton and the late Gwen (Merideth) Merchant.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughter, Sara, Dartmouth; sons, Clark and Lee, both of Ottawa, Ont.; the joy of his life, his only granddaughter, Mackenzie Leigh Merchant; sister, Susan Merchant, Dartmouth; brother, Gary Merchant, Union Centre.

Visitation 2-4, 6-8 p.m. Thursday with memorial service 3 p.m. Friday, both in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Reception will follow in Oceanview Reception Centre of the Atlantic Funeral Home, Dartmouth. Private family interment will be in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.

No flowers by request. Donations in memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

George Donaldson

DONALDSON, George - 75, Dartmouth, passed away November 20, 2002, in QEII Health Sciences Centre. He was born September 28, 1927, to the late Alice and George Donaldson, in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Prior to immigrating to Canada in 1952, he served with the British Merchant Navy as a marine engineer. In Canada, he continued his career with the Western Union cable ships, the Cyrus Field and the Lord Nelson; was the chief engineer on the C.N. ferry, Confederation, and served 21 years with the Shipping Inspection Service of the Ministry of Transport. He was a member of the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineering and a long-time member and avid swimmer at Dartmouth Sportsplex.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila (Smith), Dartmouth; daughters, Carole Bevan, Ottawa; Deirdre MacIntyre, Mississauga; Hilary Donaldson, Calgary; grandchildren, Allan, Alex, Ian, Bronwen; sisters, Alice Blair, Phyllis Aitken and Gladys Eckhard, Scotland; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by sister, Ina Mutch (Scotland).

No service by request. Cremation has taken place. Burial at a later date.

No flowers, donations to a charity of choice. Arrangements entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Homes.

Donald C.R. Bremner

BREMNER, Donald C.R. - 75, Spryfield, died November 23, 2002, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Theodore and Lillian (Dixon) Bremner.

He worked with CNCP Telecommunications for 46 years. He was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts of Canada and was also a member of The Salvation Army.

He is survived by his wife, Alice (Castilloux); daughters, Wanda and Dawn, both of Spryfield; sons, Ted and Robert, Spryfield; Gary (Karen), Riverview, N.B.; brothers, Dave Williams (May), Lyonal, both of Halifax; sisters, Jean Parsons, Lillian Coughran (Walter), Shirley (Gareth) Langley, all of Halifax; grandchildren, Brian, Jeff, Nicki, Ashley, Jamie and Dominic.

The remains are resting in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., where visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today and Tuesday. Cremation to follow. Memorial service 10 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Interment will be at a later date.

Donations to The Salvation Army, Spryfield Corps.

Gerald Patrick Burns

BURNS, Gerald Patrick - 87, Dartmouth, passed away on November 22, 2002, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late William and Catherine (Hartlen) Burns.

He worked at Moir's in Halifax on the 8th floor for several years. He also worked as a foreman at Standard Paving Ltd. in Halifax for over 20 years.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Freda (West) Burns; daughters, Helen, Dartmouth; Geraldine (Richard) Chestnut, Truro; son, James (Carla), Dartmouth; sister, Geraldine, Ontario; brother, Robert, Halifax.

He was predeceased by sisters, Catherine, Beatrice, Rhoda, Florence, Hazel, Audrey; brothers, Louis and Harold.

A memorial service will take place 2 p.m. Monday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, Rev. Patricia Malin officiating. Burial in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Lower Sackville.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Edith Odessa MacPherson (Andrews)

MacPHERSON (Andrews), Edith Odessa - 67, passed away peacefully in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, Thursday, November 21, 2002, surrounded by her family. Born in Boylston, Guysborough Co., April 19, 1935, she was a daughter of the late James and May (Wilcox) Andrews.

She was a devoted loving wife and mother and will be sadly missed by her family and the many friends she touched so dearly throughout her life.

She is survived by her husband, Lewis James; sons, Harvey (Joanne Anstey), Riverview, N.B.; David (Kathy Hudson), Dartmouth; Wade (Nancy Bruce), St. Margaret's Bay; Darryl, Dartmouth; daughters, Marilyn (John Fraser), Madeline (John Wendover), both of Alberta; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will take place 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Cremation will take place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Father Patrick Cosgrove officiating. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. A reception will follow in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lung Association of Nova Scotia.
