Elijah Lorne Tully

1929 – 2008

Lorne Tully passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on June 24, 2008 at the age of 79. Lorne was predeceased by his parents, brother Jack, sister Francis and son Tim. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years Osono (Sally), son Terry and daughter-in-law Cathy, and siblings Hazel, Joyce, Marion, Ruth and Kalman.

Lorne was born on March 14, 1929 on the farm where he grew up and eventually owned and operated. During his farming days Lorne was a lifetime member of the Canadian Charlois Association and took great pride in his purebred Charlois beef herd. His herd steadily grew until his decision to retire from farming.

Lorne also enjoyed making things grow. Whether it was the vegetables in his garden, the apples and saskatoons in his orchard or the flowers that were everywhere in his yard Lorne loved to put his green thumb to work. He also enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labour with friends and family and was even known to hand a bag of apples to the train engineers when they were stopped at the railway crossing.

A favourite pastime was the searching for and carving of diamond willow into canes. Some of his beautiful canes were often gifted to friends and family from near and far.

For many years Lorne was an active Masonic member in the Assiniboine Lodge No. 7 as well as Electa Chapter No. 2. He thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship of his Lodge brothers and members of the Electa Chapter No. 2. Due to ill health in the last few years he could not fully participate with them to the extent that he wished. However, his thoughts and support were always with them.

Lorne will be sorely missed by friends, family and anyone who came in contact with his warm and generous personality.

It was his expressed wish that no service of any kind be held but that people remember him each in their own way. It is the wish of the family that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the charity of your choice. Lorne gave so generously to others, it is only fitting that this continues after his passing.

Wallace Bruce Williams

Funeral service will be held in the chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Monday, July 7, 2008 at 1:30 PM with the Reverend Elizabeth Kerr officiating.

As a very young man, he started working in a lumber camp in Ontario as a helper but wasn’t long before he had his own team of horse, something he was quite proud of. For many years after he spent time between farming with his father and the construction industry working on such projects as the St Lawrence Seaway, he worked on a project he didn’t find out till years later was the test pad for the engine of the now infamous Avro Arrow. After he married Dorothy, he ended his construction career working nights on the Portage Diversion, and started farming full time with his dad and later with his son’s and nephew. In his later years he could be found helping James with the cattle, that was his way of life.

Predeceased by his parents, Margaret & Bruce Williams, his sister Evelyn Flynn, he leaves to mourn his passing his wife Dorothy, two sons; Marvin (Alley & family) and granddaughter Brittany of Portage, James of Rural Portage, one daughter Maureen (Robert) Desjardin of Portage and grandchildren Tammy (Randy) Murray and children Whitney & Justin of Salmon Arm, BC, Sherri (Dave) Radford and children Kyle, Matthew & Tyson of MacGregor, and Laurie Saltise and children Braden & Brenden of Portage , Manitoba. He will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews; Morley (Colleen) Flynn and family of Portage, Lynda (John) McNaughton and family of Alberta, Deanna (Bernie) Roy and family of Winnipeg.

Should friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Catherine Newham-Portage Office, 103 Wilkinson Crescent Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 1A7.
